Write about an artist and a piece of their work.
Christopher Wood was a painter. He commited suicide in 1930 by throwing himself onto the railway line. He was supposedly a handsome man, which made him popular with women, although he was infact gay. 'Englands finest painter. His vision is true, his grasp is real, his power is life itself.' He took elements from other artists styles and mixed and laborated them to his own. His most famous painting is probably The Yellow Man. It combines pink and blue Picasso figures and are placed on an English village street. They are out of scale and with the wrong perspective. An acrobat wears a yellow costume with a black coat contrasting against the greys and cold tones of the village. The heads represent lead death masks and empty expressions. The light of the painting is cast from a hidden moon.

Picasso Pablo Picasso is considered by many to be the greatest artist of the 20th century. Picasso was at the forefront of the development of modern art. His renowned piece, Guernica, 1937 is a huge mural which pictures the bombing of a Spanish city.

L.S. Lowry
When I was little, I really liked the song 'Matchstalk Men And Matchstalk Cats And Dogs'. In fact, I still do. It's about the painter L.S Lowry. Lowry is probably one of the most popular artists of the 20th century. A Mancunian, he is best known for his urban and industrial landscapes of working-class Manchester in the 1930s.
His painting 'Market Scene Northern Town' depicts a market taking place in Pendelbury, close to his home. I like how the tall, steel, market covers look like the ones in Preston. The figures are the 'matchstalk' ones, like in the song. There is an industrial background overshadowing the scene.

Jacob Epstein's "Rock Drill" It's an image that's been repated in many school text books many times, but when I saw this in real life it really took my breath away. It's a bronze sculpture of a bizarre, nearly-human figure - is it an elongated robotic head? Or a human head in a visor? What is that womb-like recession in it's body? Are those protruding ribs or some form of body armour? Epstein himself described it as “a machine-like robot, visored, menacing, and carrying within itself its progeny, protectively ensconced … No humanity, only the terrible Frankenstein’s monster we have made ourselves into.” It has often been interpreted as a reaction to the First World War, but Epstein commenced work in 1913 (ie the year before war broke out) It is said to have originally been more militaristic, but Epstein sheared off its right arm and lower body in what was probably a fit of self-doubt before it was ever exhibited.
