seen as we are supposed guitar loving on this board, I see a distinct lack of guitar threads. I was just wondering if any other guitarists/bassists among you ever try messing around with different tunings? I've found C G C F A A to be good for song writing some stuff. You get the low C which is ace for energetic riff stuff, then the double A A which gives a spaced out placebo type sound (think of the guitar on "without you I'm nothing) or can be used for inserting a few jazz type chords into an otherwise rock type song. other tunings I use are dropped d tunings (means you can get the whole power chord into the riffs packing a lot more power) or E A D G B B for the same spaced out sound but other wise normal tuning.

yes there are many many different tunings! i was reading an interview with steve vai and he's tuned to all e before which is about as weird as it gets? there was a tuning which was really good for octaves but i cannot remember it :/ another guitar related point, so many guitarists i know just whack their volume up to full and forget about it! i personally put it around 7 (out of 10) and then you can push it up to 10 if you need a louder lead sound, putting the volume down abit from the guitar takes alot of scratch noise off of the strings as well, annd if you put the volume to around 3 or 4 (this only really works on expensive guitars, eg fender american standards, gibsons etc) and use an over driven channel on the amp then you get a really nice glassy mellow clean guitar sound !

The best tuning I've found recently is Db Ab Db Db Db Db, which I stole off Dashboard Confessional ;D I change it to Db Ab Db Db Ab Db for some songs or just standard Open Db [Db Ab Db F Ab Db). They're all really cool in that you don't have to fret much stuff to get a nice sounding chord. Other than those I just play mainly in standard or drop d but a half-step down, my strings tend to break too often in regular tuning Jewel uses some pretty cool tunings too, which escape my mind at the moment, Nick Drake also, but I tend not to retune the whole guitar for just one song.

I'm just getting to that stage where I feel I can actually play the guitar. Ok - so I don't know technical terms and my guitar ain't the best quality instrument ever made but what I do I can actually DO. It's such a nice and liberating feeling.

Yay!!!! ;D yes making up chords is fun. I find some nice jazzy sounding chords that way. and noony your tuning from dashboard confessional sounds interesting...... I would try it if I didn't know it would break all my strings I now use one guitar for normal and dropped D tuning. and my old one for C G C F A A tuning. I need more guitars too experiment with

I dropped my guitar. Um, well I tune normally, and I have one guitar, and no effects except distortion of course.
