This has probably been done before, if so, ignore me. I am trying to fill the board with 'new and interesting posts', but I may have failed on both counts. Many people have said to me what an excellent name Instead of May have. But where exactly does the name come from? Could it be that Charlie was born seven months late, in December Instead Of May? Perhaps. Or maybe they were on their way to band practice in Maidenhead, and ended up in Brighton Instead Of May[denhead]? Or could it simply be that the band felt Instead Of May was a nice name? Please, feel free to share your theories. Hopefully they'll be better than mine. [If you knew how long it took me to think of those, you'd pity me even more than you do now, I promise you ]

I heard that they flicked through a magazine and picked three words at random, but I don't really believe it.

Well, Charlie was about to do one, and then decided band members should keep out.

I think they called themselves Instead Of May because instead of the all-seeing, all-hearing, guitar, bass and drum playing, singing girl called May, they decided to chuck her out of her one member band type thing and they joined it (At least I know what I mean)... hence, they are there and May isn't... They...you... are there instead of May...
I'm sorry.

Dude! Yes 8) The thread is alive, ALIVE, I say!
I think they were called Instead Of May, because Lizzie was out walking and saw a horse that would only eat chocolate, rather than hay. She ran home, and e-mailed Charlie, to tell of this wonder, but in her excitement wrote;
'The horse eats chocolate instead of may!'
Charlie found the mis-type intruiging, and it rested at the back of her mind, until the time came to think of a band name.
The rest, as they say, is history.

I think they're called Instead of May because...
They wanted to be called June, instead of may... but then realised that Instead of May sounded better, thus the creation of the name.
Yeah.

I believe that Peff read this story whilst researching a project of some description.
*** In the days of Camelot, there was an annual jousting competition for the peasants of England held by King Arthur. It was based on an ancient tradition and ordinary men would travel from miles around to take part. The prize was a knighthood [there were always seats to fill around the Round Table, as knights kept going off and being killed by dragons and things].
One year, a mysterious stranger arrived and beat everyone else to a pulp. The stranger was summoned to the knighting-block, and asked to remove his helmet. Upon doing so, it was revealed that he... was a she!
"We can't have girl knights" sneered Lancelot, "They get scared of stuff." But Arthur, being a relatively modern man, decided this was rubbish, and asked the woman's name. "My name is Instead" she announced, "from the village of May." "Very well then" said Arthur, "You shall now be known as Instead of May". And he knighted her.
And so Instead of May was the first female knight. She killed lots of dragons*, and lived happily ever after. The ***
Peff thought the name seemed appropriate for an all female band, and when she started one of her own made use of it.
*I would like to add that IOM do not condone the killing of dragons for sport. Well, they might. I don't know... I'll put it up on the questions page if i get the chance. But for now, don't jump to any conclusions about IOMs dragon-slaughtering activities.

Or maybe...
They were all jesting around the dining table in Katie's basement (yes katie, you now have a basement - go check if you don't believe me. You also keep your dining table in their too) playing illegal gambling card games. They had no access to normal playing cards, so used the ones you get free with promotional packs of Tetley, you know - the ones with monkeys on... Chimps to be prescise, but anyway... Just as they were finishing off a game of 'snap' (yes, illegal snap), Charlie said "Hey, let's go for kebabs.. Vegetarian kebabs that is..."
So, when they arrived at Crystal's Kebab House, they all ordered their kebabs, with the exception of Liz, as she had brought home made tofu with her. Uh-hum. Anyhoo, after they had all consumed their nutrients, they went for a stroll in a scary unkown forest, and what else was lurking in their but the most fantastic fairground you could ever imagine! Big spinny things and flashing lights everywhere! (Well, not literally everywhere, that would be scary)
On they went. They didn't stop for a quick ride on the dodgems or what not - kebabs taste better on the way down than they do on the way up.
After two moon cycles of walking deep into the forest (yes folks, that would be 56 days), they decided to go back home.
56 more days passed and they all said their farewells and went to sleep intheir nice warm beds.
The next day, Peff rang everyone telling them how she had a weird dream where a derranged Pixie called Bobbley, with turquoise skin, five eyes and big pointy ears, had demanded her to call the band Instead of May otherwise he would hunt then all down and kill them with his bare feet.
In fear of their lives, they named their band Instead of May.
And ever since that night, Bobbley has been spotted at each venu the gals played at, jsut to make sure they kept the name.
I spotted him on April 13. He glared at me with his five eyes and then darted off into the distance....

Aw, I'm gonna play too...
...Our first gig was accidental. We just happened to have our instruments, wandering around Brighton during the Festival (which happens in May I'm sure you all realise). We were going to see a band play a special set in dedication to the festival ,and had named themselves MAY in honour. But their equipment mysteriously vanished and we just happened to be there. In desperation the gig promoters asked us to play and we graciously accepted. At the time we were called The Blind L esbians but they announced us as "A band instead of May" and that's how we were credited in local newspaper The Leader
"Unsigned band Instead of May Save Proceedings"
was the headline.

As has been noted, I, Peff, am a genius.
I wrote a complicated computer programme (Ok... a crappy one using BASIC) that generated random words. After a few attempts the only one that was anywhere near decent was "Instead of May"

We used to be called "May" but Charlie hated the name. She said to us "We need to be called something instead of May." Charlie mumbles. We heard her say "We need to be called Instead of May." We obeyed.

We were called IOM first, because we wanted to have a name that was all letters (like AFI and TSOL and EMF etc). Then people asked us what it stood for, and that was the first thing we could think of.
