They do indeed. How would you describe your sound as being different from other bands around at the moment? PARVA: We write catchy, memorable tunes that stick in people’s heads. There’s loads of rock bands around at the moment who rely more on their sound than their songs. They might sound good because they’re coming up with stuff that fits really well into the guitar band vein, but watch one of their gigs and you won’t remember a single song. People come up to us after gigs and say ‘I really liked the song fourth from the start’ and they’ll start to hum a hook or sing some of the lyrics. Not every band can do that. Bands like The Strokes and The White Stripes are successful because they have loads of amazing songs to back up their sound. Why is it that you think you’ll be successful where other bands have failed to deliver? PARVA:Many bands at the moment have the trashy guitar sound which comes across really well live, but it just doesn’t translate well when they’re recording – it loses something when you take it out of the live context. We’re quite unique in the fact that we can be aggressive and memorable at the same time. Also, a lot of bands can bow to trends really easily, but we’re pretty constant in our sound. “Heavy’ was written 2 years ago and compared to our new stuff, the sound and attitude towards our music hasn’t changed at all. What’s been the best gig you’ve played so far? PARVA: It has to be The Garage at Highbury (29th May). We were playing with Easyworld, it was amazing. That was the first time we’ve ever had a large amount of people standing right at the barriers at the front, as soon as we came on, just standing there and staring at us, loving it. We kept smiling at each other, because it was just a taster of things to come. They were all there singing the words and absolutely loving it. It was brilliant. What do you think of the current music scene in Leeds? A lot of music fans think that the city is slightly lacking in decent gig venues for the size and musical reputation of it as a city. What are your thoughts on this? PARVA: There’s probably around 300 bands in Leeds so there’s a really strong music scene, but there’s just too many bad venues around. Some of the best gigs we’ve played though have been ones where the audience have been really amazing – we’ve been on stage and there have been fans at the front, clinging on the barriers, singing the words to the songs really loudly all the way through, obviously really enjoying themselves. That’s much more important than the venue that you’re playing in. In recent years lots of bands who have originated in Leeds have decided that in order to make it, they have to move down to London. Do you think you’ll stay in Leeds for the foreseeable future or will you use another city as your main base? PARVA: Yeah, we’ll definitely stay in Leeds, it’s got everything we need. London is important in musical terms, but none of us can really stand staying there for more than a week. What is your ultimate wish for the band? PARVA: A sell-out tour would be amazing. There’s not so much any special place we’d like to play, but maintaining the buzz we give to that audience has to be an ultimate achievement. To keep playing good music is a big wish too. You get the impression that a lot of the bands around at the moment won’t be musicians for very long as they don’t have the songs to maintain any kind of longevity. With no memorable songs they’ll soon be forgotten. Oasis are making waves in the music scene after being out of the spotlight for a while. In your opinion - bunch of wankers or musical geniuses? PARVA: I dunno, they’ve become a bit too comfortable as a band, it’s like they’re frightened of being exciting again. Liam Gallagher is a brilliant performer. He can just stand there with his arms up and every single person will cheer, it’s like he doesn’t need to perform at all. We don’t rate him musically though. Robin - "they put on a good show, or the singer did, but musically they were shit. Good for a Hives rip-off band. Very repetitive with their lyrics."
I had fun!
